OK, Ken,
do not hesistate to ask for any further help here. And keep in mind that there are some exciting hungarian rivers too (for chub, pike, etc) worth visiting, so you have several possible targets once you are here 'round Budapest. For example the river Ipoly or Duna are really handy if you stay near the capital.

Cheers,
Adam

Hello Dry, Dark Wader, and Adam. Thanks very much for your messages. I apologize for my slow response to them: I have been travelling.

The various links indicate that there is plenty of great fishing to do! I'm particularly excited to hear that there are some grayling nearby, as these are somewhat rare in the US (although their populations are growing in Montana). I am also pleased to hear that the Hutchen salmon still exists, though I'm sure it must be very, very rare.

I will most certainly check out some fishing in other countries; Slovenia looks particularly attractive. However, I look foward to checking out some of the new water in Hungary, too. We are probably only staying a couple of weeks this summer. We may very well extend the length of our stay a week or two though, as I am on sabbatical from work. Regardless, we'll return to Central Europe many times, as all my wife's family lives in or near Budapest.

Thanks again,

Ken

Hey Ken,

Adam mentioned some "newly formed waters", here are a few of links you might want to check out with your wife:

But clearly, if you're looking for brown trout, you do not want to miss fisheries
in NEARBY COUNTRIES like the Sava Bohinka in Slovenia or Ribnik, Una, Unac in Bosnia just to mention a few.

IDÉZET(Browny @ 2007.04.02. 05:50) *

Hello:

My name is Ken. I'm from the US, but my wife is Hungarian. I am a very avid fly fisher, as I grew up in Montana casting a fly from a young age. My wife and I will be visiting Hungary this summer, and I'm hoping to do a little brown trout fishing in the region. I'd love to catch some of these trout on their native continent.

Thanks,

Ken Lokensgard

Hi Ken,

you are really welcome! Not simply as you are the first guy on the international forum, but it is also nice to hear that you are showing interest in visiting hungarian rivers after such experiences in the US. Hope that you can gather all information here and I am sure that all of us are pleased to be of help...
Generally I would say that Hungary is not mainly about brownies at the moment but there are some newly formed waters in the country where you can already find a significant population. In addition, pike, chub etc. can be hooked in the majority of our rivers (similarly big fun) and we regularly visit some nereby countries too, where trout monsters are....So, feel free to ask for any kind of help here and hopefully you will have satisfying view by the time you get here.

Cheers,

Adam

I'll read through the various threads on the forum with my wife over the next few days (I'll need her help, as I don't read Hungarian). I look foward to talking fly fishing after that.

If anyone has any questions about fishing in North America, let me know. I do most of my US fishing in Pennslvania, North Carolina, and Montana. I also fish in Alberta, Canada during these summers (I travel around a lot for work).

Thanks,

Ken Lokensgard
